We first met in the nascent days of the program at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, Hamilton. I was brought there by its previous president to form a new obstetrics and gynecology department in a hospital that had never delivered a baby. One of the requirements I placed on them was to support us with 24-hour in-house pediatric/neonatal coverage. To the hospitals great credit, they agreed. It was also the hosptials great fortune when you were chosen to run the infant (in all senses of the word) neonatal program.
From zero deliveries at the start of 1996, we increased to 800-plus by the end of 2001. Starting from the lowest Level I neonatal classification we moved to Level II in what I believe is still the fastest time in the history of New Jersey. Both these feats were especially impressive given the intense pressure from local competing institutions. Neither accomplishment would have been possible without the quality neonatal services you developed, administered, and served as head of in the neonatal section at RWJUHH.
I was particularly impressed with your organization abilities. There was never a time when the coverage was anything less than superb. All problems and concerns of the obstetricians and midwives were dealt with in a professional, collegial and expeditious manner.
It was a privilege to work with you during a very rewarding time in my medical career. I wish you good luck in your future endeavors. You will be a boon to any institution wise enough to retain your services.
