CentraState:

Onsite saves $300,000 up front, improves coverage, contributes to 54% growth

  • Before: 1200 deliveries, partial on-call coverage
  • Today: 1900+ deliveries, 24/7 in-house coverage

In 1999, CentraState’s Level II nursery was attended by a single neonatologist who performed rounds in the daytime. Emergencies were covered by the neonatologist from home as needed, with 24/7 in-house coverage by pediatricians; however, the pediatricians were spread thin between the emergency room, pediatric floor, and the special care nursery.

As this model became even more tenuous—requiring increasing per diem backup—CentraState began soliciting proposals from area academic centers for neonatology services. Onsite was also invited to bid.

When the proposals came in, only Onsite included 24/7 in-house neonatologist coverage instead of back-up call by neonatologists—and at the same time, cost hundreds of thousands of dollars below the next bid. The choice to use Onsite became very simple.

Once at CentraState, Onsite looked for ways to continually improve care without adding cost. For instance, our neonatologists conducted training for the hospital’s nursing staff both at bedside and in scheduled lectures. This training helped them become more astute at picking up cues and aided the whole team in providing better care.

Before long, a new obstetrics practice came to town. Though intensely recruited by other area hospitals, the group settled on CentraState, crediting in large part Onsite’s in-house 24/7 coverage there. This practice also points to Onsite as a major reason they have been able to attract new physicians to their practice, growing from 3 to 6 in just 5 years.
